In a recent update on the Young Park shooting tragedy, the Las Cruces Police Department announced the arrest of a fourth suspect, a 15-year-old boy suspected of playing a role in the violent event that left three dead and 15 wounded. As stated by the Las Cruces Police Department, the young suspect was taken into custody Sunday afternoon, facing three open counts of murder, similar charges have been levied against the two other minors and 20-year-old Tomas Rivas who were previously arrested.
The investigation, which brought together multiple law enforcement agencies including the FBI, ATF, New Mexico State Police, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, perseveres as detectives work collaboratively to untangle the web of motives and circumstances leading up to the late-night shooting on Friday. While additional charges are pending all the suspects remain in custody at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with the juveniles held apart from the adults and Rivas is being held without bond while the park, a focal point of the city's leisure and recreation, was closed for an entire day to facilitate a thorough evidence collection by investigators, it has since been reopened to the public.
Sharing the unfortunate turn of events that unraveled at 850 S. Walnut St., the Las Cruces Police Department detailed that the incident claimed the lives of Andrew Madrid, 16; Jason Gomez, 18; and Dominick Estrada, 19. The ages of the survivors range from 16 to 36, spanning a spectrum of youth and adult society whose evening recreation met with horror.
