An 18-year-old man, Antonio Gueits, is facing first-degree murder charges after an assault in December led to the death of a 65-year-old woman in University Area Park. The victim, who has not been named, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, after being hospitalized since the attack on December 26, 2024, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
In a statement from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed his condemnation of the crime, "This was a completely senseless and inhumane attack over nothing more than a purse." He detailed the brutality of the incident and the consequential long-term suffering of the victim. The perpetrator allegedly attacked and robbed the elderly woman, an action that led to months of hospitalization and ultimately, her death.
The Sheriff's Office revealed that Gueits attacked the victim in University Area Park, robbing her in the process. The motivation for the attack seems to have been the victim's purse. The physical altercation that occurred resulted in severe injuries that left the woman fighting for her life over a sustained period.
According to Sheriff Chronister, Gueits's actions led to the victim living her final months in a state of distress and suffering, "This innocent woman was left unconscious, suffering, and fighting for her life for months because of this man's horrific actions. Now, with her tragic passing, we will make sure he is held fully accountable for this brutal crime," according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The charge represents an elevation from the initial allegations, given the victim's subsequent passing.
The case continues to unfold as the prosecution builds its case against Gueits. This event stands as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating impact of senseless violence on communities and families. As Gueits faces the legal system, the Sheriff's Office is adamant about seeking full accountability for the crime that has shaken the local community.
