A fire that broke out a Bay City home yesterday morning resulted in the death of 63-year-old resident Charles Martin, according to family and friends. The blaze, which began at 1216 Austin Street, was reported around 7:40 a.m., according to Click2Houston. Bay City firefighters were dispatched to the scene to find the house consumed with heavy smoke and flames.

Fire crews quickly began a search and rescue operation, but were unable to save Martin, who was found deceased inside his home. Neighbors, who alerted authorities about the fire, expressed concern that Martin was still inside. The fire was extinguished in about 40 minutes, and while no other injuries were reported, the house sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage.

Described by neighbor Mary Williams as "Just a really friendly dude," Martin was a solitary figure whose company was often a gathering point on his porch. Williams shared similar sentiments in an interview with Click2Houston, mentioning that his nephews would often check on him. Local children also recalled Martin giving them chores in exchange for some pocket change.

In the wake of the fatality, and with the cause of the fire yet to be determined, the Bay City Fire Marshal has enlisted the assistance from the Texas Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate further. Those with information regarding the incident have been urged to contact the Bay City Fire Marshal at 979-318-7130, as noted by FOX 26 Houston.
