A 71-year-old hiker who went missing during an excursion in the Big Maria Mountains near the Colorado River has been safely located, according to KTLA. The woman from Trona, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reported missing after failing to return from her hiking trip, as scheduled, on Tuesday, March 11.
Upon learning about the overdue hiker, the friend who was aware of her plans contacted the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office for help, approximately five hours after she was expected to return, as detailed by KTLA. Deputies from the Colorado River Sheriff’s Station conducted the initial search on the evening of her disappearance, however, their efforts were hampered by the weather which prevented the use of a helicopter, and despite deploying a drone, the woman remained undiscovered, as nightfall approached the hiker found herself low on water, and still several hours from her vehicle.
The search continued into the next day with the involvement of the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit (RMRU), who took up the search Wednesday morning. It wasn't until 7:50 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12 that the RMRU located the woman. In a report shared with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, she was found to be in good health and did not require medical attention following her ordeal. She was able to return to her vehicle unassisted and credited her survival and safe recovery to her level of preparedness for such a situation.
"She conserved water, did not hike after dark, and carried appropriate clothing and gear for an overnight stay," stated the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. Furthermore, the Sheriff’s Office recommends always informing someone of your planned route and expected return time, wearing and packing appropriate clothing for changing conditions, and carrying sufficient water for the duration of the hike.
