The New York Police Department reported Wu was crossing Hylan Boulevard from the east when a 65-year-old woman driving a 2008 Ford Edge struck him while traveling north, after the collision Wu was swiftly taken to Staten Island University North Hospital, but tragically he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene, and as of yet, there have been no arrests tied to the event.

Wu's unfortunate death marks this year's first traffic fatality within NYPD's 122nd Precinct, which oversees Dongan Hills among other areas, the Daily News noted that last year, the precinct had reported one traffic death from January 1 to March 2, in contrast to the zero fatalities recorded in the same period this year.
