An 83-year-old Middleborough woman, Michele Sperling, was found deceased yesterday after a neighbor's request for a welfare check sparked an exhaustive search. According to WCVB, the search involved a significant response from local authorities, deploying assets like drones, K9 units, and even the State Police Air Wing. Tragically, it was a state police K9 unit that discovered Sperling's body in a shallow body of water in the woods.
Earlier that day, before she was found, the Middleborough Police Department was called to conduct the welfare check on Sperling, who had last been seen around 1:30 a.m. wearing a white jacket and dark-colored pants. The effort to locate her involved various agencies, confirming that wearing a white jacket, Sperling, was last seen at the Oak Point residential community on Simmons Road. These details were gleaned from a report by MassLive.
While foul play has not been immediately suspected in the wake of the discovery, both the Middleborough Police Department and state police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sperling's death. The community and the first responders hope the ongoing investigation will provide needed closure and insights into the events that led up to the tragedy.
"It's always a sad ending when a member of our community goes missing and does not survive, despite the best efforts of dozens of first responders," Police Chief Robert Ferreira reflected in a statement obtained by WCVB. He further requested that the public respect the family's need for privacy during this period of mourning. This sentiment was echoed by Ferreira in comments sourced from MassLive, where he expressed condolences to the victim's family and loved ones.
