An 86-year-old San Marcos resident, Walter Robbins, was killed on Tuesday after his pickup truck was struck by an eastbound NCTD Sprinter train in Escondido. The tragic event occurred when Robbins maneuvered his vehicle past a lowered automatic gate and onto the railroad tracks at the intersection of Mission Road and Enterprise Street, as reported by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
According to the Medical Examiner's Office, the incident happened shortly after 1 p.m. when Robbins' Toyota pickup truck entered the railroad right-of-way and was subsequently struck by the train, resulting in his pronouncement of death at the scene due to multiple blunt force injuries. Emergency personnel, including law enforcement and fire department teams, were dispatched following 911 calls by witnesses who had observed the incident unfold right before their eyes, and Escondido firefighters later had to extricate Robbins from the wrecked vehicle.
The Times of San Diego confirms that no reported injuries were among the Sprinter train passengers or North County Transit District crew members. However, the collision did result in service delays and damage to a barrier at the train crossing; authorities stated that it appeared that the vehicle had driven past the barrier prior to the collision, which seems to suggest that this was a critical factor leading to the tragic outcome.
