Announced by the transit agency itself, a two-part fare hike is set to increase local adult cash fares from $2.50 to $2.75 beginning July 1, with a second bump bringing it to an even $3 the following year. Transbay service isn't immune to the change either, as your cross-bay journey will cost you $6.50 instead of $6. The decision split the AC Transit Board of Directors, passing by a narrow 4 to 3 margin, as per the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit).

Having pushed back fare increases due to the pandemic-induced ridership tumble, grants from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 kept things afloat, but with that well drying up and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission delivering a fiscal update that's less than optimistic, AC Transit, which finds itself in its 65th year of service, is now facing a financial crunch it hadn't braced for, one that’s ballooned by 55%, a gap rocketing from $149 million to a staggering $238 million.

These fare upticks are no drop in the bucket, expected to bolster AC Transit's coffers by an estimated $4.1 million within the next fiscal year, according to AC Transit, with aspirations of reaching nearly $8 million by FY 2026/27. It's a balancing act for the transit authority, keenly aware of the burden additional costs place on travelers amid an ongoing struggle with inflation and persistently diminished ridership since COVID-19 hit.
