The Arlington Public Library is taking strides to be more inclusive with the launch of its SNAP Sensory Program. Geared towards assisting individuals with autism, ADHD, Tourette's, and other developmental and learning disabilities, this initiative offers sensory-friendly spaces and activities. According to a statement detailed by the City of Arlington, the program aims to ensure all community members have equal access to the library's offerings.

Known as Supporting Neurodivergent Access to Programming, or SNAP, the program provides tailored adjustments to the often overstimulating library environment. "Sensory stimuli for some of our population can be very overwhelming," explained Katie Talhelm, Library Services Manager, noting the particular challenges children's programs face. Adjustments like dimming lights create a more accommodating space for those sensitive to typical sensory input. The feedback from families has been positive, with parents expressing gratitude for a welcoming space for their children. One parent conveyed their appreciation in a statement that librarian Dawn Reyes shared, as reported by the City of Arlington: "Thank you for making us feel welcome. Sometimes we don’t feel like that and thank you so much for offering a program where my son can be included."

The Kindness Room at the heart of the innovation is at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library. It is crafted as a low-stimulation area with features such as comfortable seating, sensory toys, and a color-changing light table. The intent is to provide a serene setting for children and caregivers alike. The SNAP Sensory Storytime and SNAP Sensory Art programs specifically cater to younger kids and those aged 5-10, incorporating activities like reading, singing, crafts, and sensory-integrated art exercises.

With a commitment to fostering inclusivity and supporting neurodivergent community members, the SNAP Sensory Program is just one step toward a more accessible Arlington.
