The cities of Austin, Texas, and Greater Manchester, England have recently inked a Friendship Cities Agreement with an eye toward spurring international collaboration on a number of fronts, from economic development to arts and music. In an event held on March 7th, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham made the partnership official. This alliance is set to bolster various sectors by providing a framework for knowledge exchange and cultural connections between the two cities.
"Austin thrives on creativity, entrepreneurship, and connection, and Greater Manchester mirrors that energy," said Watson during a signing ceremony that took place at Austin's City Hall. The strategy seems to aim at leveraging the strengths and similarities of both areas. As part of the Friendship Cities Agreement, the Austin Music Trade Alliance Kick-Off is scheduled for March 9, being the first of several initiatives designed to foster business and cultural links. The event features a free community concert at SXSW Community Concerts at Lady Bird Lake, including a performance by Greater Manchester's OneDa.
According to the City of Austin's announcement, the agreement highlights shared focuses such as innovation, science and technology, and education, among other areas. Burnham noted the forward-thinking nature of the cities, saying, "that don’t just adapt to change, we drive it,.” The two mayors envision the agreement leading to shared ideas and partnerships, thus creating a potent mix for advancements in tech, music, and business sectors.
Plans under the alliance include an annual implementation strategy that will guide their collaborative endeavors and establish metrics to measure progress. Notably, a Manchester visit next year is already on the docks, potentially taking the relationship to a formal Sister City status. Currently, Austin boasts 14 Sister Cities and 2 Friendship Cities, managed by the community-led Austin Sister Cities International (ASCI). Events like the upcoming music-focused kick-off concert exemplify the type of joint efforts anticipated to emerge from this agreement. With such exchanges, the cities look to fortify ties and spark transatlantic opportunities that will resonate with citizens and industries alike.
