Early on March 16, tragedy struck in the 11600 block of N. IH 35 NB, where a homicide investigation ensued after a driver was fatally wounded. The Austin Police Department reported that they received multiple emergency calls around 3:36 a.m. about a stalled Mitsubishi Mirage. The incident escalated when the vehicle, originally thought to be merely a traffic obstacle, became the center of a much grimmer scene.
The vehicle, obstructing the far left lane, was struck by an unsuspecting Ford Bronco. But it was the discovery of a gunshot wound on the driver, later identified as Edward Espino, that shifted the narrative from accident to sinister act. Despite the efforts of the ATCEMS and AFD, Mr. Espino was pronounced deceased at 4:14 a.m. The driver of the Bronco, found unharmed, was questioned and is not considered a suspect in the homicide, according to the official statement from the Austin Police Department.
Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists have since been combing the scene for clues, interviewing witnesses to piece together the moments leading up to the crash. Initial findings suggest an altercation may have led to Espino's vehicle halting on the highway, ultimately leading to the secondary collision. However, those responsible for the gunshot that took Espino's life remain unidentified.
The Austin Police urge the public to come forward with any information related to possible shots heard, suspicious vehicles, or any signs of the altercation that preceded this tragedy.
