Last Friday night, the Austin Fire Department tackled a significant blaze at a vacant apartment complex located in East Austin. Crews arrived on the scene at around 8 p.m. to the address 2026 Wheless Lane following reports of a fire with visible flames through the roof of the building. According to CBS Austin, the department quickly recognized the severity of the situation, with multiple apartments engulfed and parts of the structure collapsing, necessitating an upgrade to a 2-alarm fire.
Engulfing the apartment complex rapidly, the fire, starting at the back of the building, spread through the roof causing some walls to even collapse on themselves. As firefighters tackled the flames, fortunately, it was determined that the complex was abandoned, which had been boarded up and fenced, ensuring no occupants were at risk, FOX 7 Austin reported. Neighbors, however, highlighted ongoing issues with squatters and crime at the location.
The firefighting team, about 70 strong, managed to bring the inferno under control by 9:29 p.m., with one firefighter sustaining an injury during the operation. The individual was evaluated on the scene for injuries, which were thankfully described as non-life-threatening. Post-extinguishment, crews persisted to monitor the site for any lingering embers or potential flare-ups.

Amid all the chaos, authorities detained one person of interest in connection with the fire, whose potential role in igniting the blaze remains under investigation. After being treated for the efforts of combating the relentless flames, the injured firefighter was returned to his company. Both CBS Austin and FOX 7 Austin highlighted the detention, though no further details about the suspect or the cause of the fire have been released as of yet.
