According to a news release by the City of Austin, the amnesty initiative is designed to foster a better relationship between the justice system and the public. "AMC is proud to offer our Warrant Amnesty program to Austinites again this year. The program is a core part of our commitment to building trust and accountability with the public we serve," Clerk of the Court Mary Jane Grubb explained. A breadth of options has been made available for those who aren't in a position to pay immediately, including payment plans, community service, and hardship waivers for qualifying individuals. Last year, this gesture resulted in the clearing of 1,988 outstanding warrants and the termination of 14,466 civil parking citations.
The City has structured the program to be as accessible as possible, with multiple walk-in dockets scheduled for Mondays through Fridays. During these dockets, no appointments are necessary; judges and prosecutors will be on hand to review cases, discuss options, and issue the appropriate orders. Free Spanish interpretation services are provided for those who need them, ensuring that language barriers do not hinder access to justice. All these services come at no charge to the participants, reinforcing the court's commitment to public service.
In keeping with the ethos of inclusivity and approachability, the main location for Municipal Court cases will be at 6800 Burleson Road, Building 310, Suite 175, within the Bergstrom Technology Center complex. For individuals who don't need to speak to a judge or prosecutor, substations will be available during operating hours at 2121 West Parmer Lane, Suite 116.
