The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has unveiled plans to begin construction on a new bridge across Poland Branch, marking a significant investment in regional infrastructure. Beginning March 31, the deteriorating structure at LA 516, east of Fryeburg in Bienville Parish, will be dismantled and replaced after 64 years of service. Motorists, meanwhile, will have to adjust their routes, as detours are set via LA 154 and US 371, this development is detailed on the DOTD's official announcement.
Traffic patterns in the area are expected to shift significantly as the existing bridge, located just over a mile west of the intersection with LA 154, is removed. The department's announcement provided a concise summary of construction activities that include "clearing and grubbing to remove vegetation in the work area, grading, drainage structures, asphalt milling, pavement patching, base course, lime treatment, asphalt overlay, and construction of a new modernized concrete structure." Construction is slated to be complete by late July this year, though this working timeline is, as usual, subject to the vagaries of weather and unforeseen delays.
The plan signals a broader commitment from the state to revitalize its rural infrastructure, with the DOTD emphasizing the strategic use of taxpayer dollars to bolster long-term community growth and sustainability. The aged bridge, built in the 1960s, has reached the end of its life, necessitating an update to meet current standards and traffic demands.
