The recent blizzard conditions in Colorado have prompted a series of road closures across the state, as heavy snowfall and robust winds threaten traveler safety. Notably, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that as of early Wednesday morning, the eastern plains have been particularly affected, with several highways shuttered due to the adverse weather, according to 9News.
Safety advisories followed with significant closures, including Highway 94 being shut down in both directions from North Ellicott Highway to Kendrick Road. The highway monitoring service COTrip described conditions as snow-packed, with poor visibility and high winds making travel inadvisable. Further, US Highway 24 has faced a similar fate, "closed in both directions between Constitution Avenue in Colorado Springs and US Highway 40, one mile west of Limon," as FOX21 reported.
The weather-related road troubles extended to vehicular mishaps, as the Palmer Divide area north of Colorado Springs witnessed what can only be described as a logistical nightmare. On Tuesday night, upwards of 20 semi-trucks were involved in slideouts amid icy rain and snow showers that significantly reduced visibility. The situation was severe enough that Douglas County issued an accident alert, as stated by CBS News Colorado.
Adding to the series of closures, a complete overnight shutdown of Interstate 70 on Colorado's Eastern Plains was enforced due to a blizzard warning. In these regions, the driving conditions have been especially treacherous, and authorities continue to urge caution for those considering travel in these areas. The collective impact of the storm has rippled through transportation, commercial trucking, and day-to-day activities for Coloradans facing, this unrelenting show of winter’s might.
