The quiet of a Cape Cod town was disrupted earlier this week when an alleged domestic assault led to a multi-agency manhunt, culminating in the arrest of a Chatham man. According to an update from the Chatham Police Department, a woman presented herself at the Harwich Police/Fire station on March 3, with injuries from what she claimed was a domestic assault. The victim was subsequently transported to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment.
Following an investigation by the Chatham Police Department, Gary Shawn McKenzie, age 46, was identified as the suspect. What followed was a several-hour search spanning multiple departments and involving advanced technology. Assisting Chatham Police in their pursuit were personnel from the Massachusetts State Police, the Harwich Police Department, the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department, and the Chatham Fire Department. The concerted effort included K9 teams and drones piloted by teams from the Sheriff’s Department and the Town of Chatham.
The utilization of these resources and the collection of cell phone data eventually led authorities to McKenzie. He was located and arrested around 5:30 a.m. in South Chatham, bringing an end to the manhunt. The announcement of his capture and charges was made in a Facebook post from the Chatham Police.
McKenzie faces multiple charges, including kidnapping, assault and battery (A&B) with a dangerous weapon causing serious injury, A&B, witness intimidation, resisting arrest, A&B with a dangerous weapon, and threats. He was arraigned in Orleans District Court following his arrest.
