Carrboro residents have a chance to voice their thoughts on the town's growth and development, with two public forums announced aiming to seek input on the new Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). This initiative follows Carrboro's Connects Comprehensive Plan, targeting enhancements across housing, environment, and infrastructure. Interested locals can attend the events on Mar. 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., or Mar. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Town Hall located at 301 W. Main St. Carrboro, NC 27510, according to the Town of Carrboro announcement.
The UDO's impact is wide-reaching, not only will it contain the town's zoning and subdivision regulations, and associated permitting procedures it will also influence types of housing that developers might build, with a specific aim to make attainable and affordable housing more accessible according to the town's announcement.
Moreover, the establishment of the UDO is an integral part of Carrboro's inclusive approach to growth—with considerations extending to climate concerns, race and equity, and sustainable development. The framework will set out strict stormwater and flooding protection standards in future developments and prescribe expectations for tree preservation, canopy coverage, and the planting of new greenery throughout Carrboro.
In addition to environmental and housing considerations, the UDO is expected to enhance Carrboro’s streets for safer, more efficient mobility; by potentially updating standards for sidewalks, bike lanes, and traffic calming measures the town aims to foster a more inviting and accessible community for all modes of transportation.
