Karlton Johnson, a former principal at Cypress Run Education Center in Broward County, has had charges for allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer dismissed, as confirmed by the Broward State Attorney’s Office. According to a close-out memorandum cited by CBS News Miami, there was "insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt" that Johnson committed a crime when he displayed an honorary deputy badge during a traffic stop on January 7.
During the stop, which was triggered by an altered license plate, Johnson reportedly identified himself as a reserve officer, a claim later found to be untrue. He told the trooper, "I'm one of you. I'm one of you," before his arrest, as per CBS News Miami.
However, an investigation by Florida Highway Patrol revealed no intent to misuse the badge, and Johnson did not attempt to act in a law enforcement capacity, such as detaining someone or directing an officer. Johnson also claimed to be related to basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal, as mentioned by WSVN.
In a statement obtained by CBS News Miami, Johnson expressed his relief, saying, "I am happy for this opportunity and happy to move on with my life and I am thankful to my family, friends and the community here in South Florida." Johnson, who was named Principal of the Year in 2016, reflected on his 35-year career in education and his commitment to helping young people.
Johnson’s attorney, Johnny McCray Jr. told CBS News Miami, "The close-out memo says there was no crime. There was no attempt on his part to shake down anybody or make any arrests." A decision is still pending regarding Johnson's reinstatement to his position at Cypress Run Education Center.
