The National Weather Service in Charlotte, NC, has issued a warning for an increased risk of fire danger, effective from 4 PM EDT this afternoon through the evening. According to the forecast provided by the NWS, today's weather is expected to be mostly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers, primarily before 2 PM, with the day becoming sunny later on and a high near 66 degrees. Strong southwest winds of 10 to 16 mph are predicted, with possible gusts reaching as high as 29 mph.
As the weather shifts tonight, the forecast indicates it will become mostly cloudy, then gradually clear up. The temperature is expected to drop to around 37 degrees, with persistent west northwest winds of 9 to 14 mph that may again gust up to 28 mph. "A combination of low relative humidity, gusty winds, and dry fuels will increase fire danger significantly on Saturday afternoon," the National Weather Service advised. Current conditions suggest that a Red Flag Warning might be necessary to be issued if trends heighten the fire risk.
Looking ahead to the weekend, locals can expect sunny weather with Friday's and Saturday's highs around 65 and 73 degrees, respectively. Saturday night's forecast promises clear skies with a low around 44. Sunday remains sunny with a high near 74 degrees, but heading into next week, there's a projected 50% chance for showers come Monday.
In light of the fire hazard, the NWS implores residents to heed advice from local burn permitting authorities regarding the possibility of outdoor burning. "Dry fuels, gusty winds, and low relative humidity will all lead to increased Fire Danger today. Thus, a Fire Danger Statement has been issued for the North Carolina Foothills and Piedmont from 4 PM to 8 PM this evening," said an NWS spokesperson. The public is urged to exercise extreme caution should they choose to burn outside during this period.
