Cheryl Collins has stepped into the role of executive director at Orlando Shakes, a move announced by the nonprofit late Friday and reported by Orlando Sentinel. Before this, Collins had served as an executive consultant for the organization since December, stepping in after Larry Mabrey's mid-November exit, on which neither party has publicly commented. Her title as executive director sets her apart from her predecessors who held the title of managing directors.

"It has been a delight to work with Cheryl the past couple months," Jim Helsinger, Orlando Shakes' longtime artistic director, stated, confirming his continued co-leadership with Collins at the theater. Rita Lowndes, board chair, added, "She brings to Shakes not only exceptional experience but also extraordinary enthusiasm." These comments highlight the optimistic transition as Collins begins actively navigating her new role, as the Orlando Sentinel details.

With a background that includes almost eight years at Orlando Ballet and over 15 years with Orlando Health Foundation, Collins’ expertise in fundraising and development is well established in the Central Florida arts community. Her time at Orlando Ballet was not without its achievements. As per Orlando Sentinel, she led initiatives such as the $3.6 million "Nutcracker" production fundraising and the establishment of Harriett’s Orlando Ballet Centre. However, her contract was not renewed in March 2024 in a move by the ballet company to rejig its leadership for increased national prominence.

Now in its 36th season, Orlando Shakes is a pillar in Central Florida's professional theater scene. It boasts an array of contemporary, classic, and children’s plays and an annual budget exceeding $4 million. Board Chair Rita Lowndes was quoted in a separate report by Bungalower, lauding Collins for her distinctive blend of experience and enthusiasm.
