In response to the escalating egg prices in Chicago, one pastor has mobilized his community for relief. The Reverend Dr. Charlie Dates, head pastor of both Progressive Baptist Church and Salem Baptist Church, is coordinating an effort to hand out 40,000 eggs to support families impacted by the price surge. Inflation may have cooled down slightly last month, but food prices remain an enduring strain on household budgets.
The egg distribution comes amidst a backdrop where inflation increased by 0.2%, somewhat easing economists' concerns yet leaving consumers with the persistent drag of high grocery costs. According to the ABC7 Chicago interview, Phil Lempert, a food industry expert, cautions that despite the CPI report, grocery prices are a prevailing worry. "Meat and poultry up 7.7%," Lempert said. "Pork, not so much. It's up about 1.5%. So the reality is, as much as we've been complaining bout the prices in the supermarket, it's going to get worse, and that's before all these tariffs take place."
Paying nearly 60% more than last year for eggs, community members on Chicago’s South Side are being hit especially hard; low-income families are particularly vulnerable. The "egg crisis" prompted Dates to act, spurred by the needs he's seen in his congregates and the wider community. "Our churches are giving away 40,000 eggs this weekend, because Black families are struggling at the grocery store," Pastor Dates told ABC7 Chicago. "Historically, the Black church in America has cared for the Black flourishing of the family."
Dates highlighted the commitment to aiding those grappling with economic hurdles. "Historically, the Black church in America has cared for the Black flourishing of the family. We also know that eggs are the primary source of income for low-income families. So, rather than waiting for someone else to fix this... we can still care for our people in compassionate ways," Dates remarked in a statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. The eggs, provided by wholesale distributor Sysco, will be packaged by a group of 300 volunteers, including longtime Salem church member Van Johnson. Struggling with the high cost of eggs for a lot of families, these volunteers believe that any assistance will prove a blessing to lighten their burden.
The giveaway is set to occur this Saturday from noon to 2 p.m., with locations across the South Side being serviced. Members from Progressive Baptist Church will be present at intersections like 47th Street and Wells Street, 55th Street and Wells Street, and 35th Street and King Drive. Salem Baptist Church members will be at 87th Street and Wells Street, 108th Street, and Michigan Avenue to aid in the distribution.
