The Citrus Heights Police Department has recently highlighted the successful efforts of their detective and canine partner in cracking down on significant mail-related crimes, involving fraud and narcotics trafficking, which led to federal prison sentences for the offenders. In an update provided by the department, a detective and her dog, K9 "Viva," are a part of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service team that has worked diligently to uncover these crimes within the region.
One case involved a Citrus Heights woman who pled guilty to a large-scale unemployment fraud estimated to be worth over $1 million. The scheme operated by making fraudulent claims using stolen identities and the Emergency Development Department (EDD) system. According to CHPD's Facebook page, the woman's illicit activities were uncovered leading to her conviction, and eventual guilt plea.
Another investigation took down a Sacramento man involved in major drug trafficking. He was recently sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for distributing meth and counterfeit pills through the mail. These are just examples of how thorough investigative work, and the acute olfactory skills of K9 Viva, play a crucial role in capturing criminals who misuse postal services for illegal activities.
The Citrus Heights PD's collaborative efforts with USPIS and other agencies accentuate the importance of partnership in law enforcement. "Sometimes, it leads our investigators down a trail of fraud, narcotics, and federal prison sentences," the department highlighted the reach of such investigations on their social media.
