A Columbus community is grappling with a tragic event following a February altercation that left a 70-year-old man dead and a 36-year-old facing murder charges. The initial incident unfolded on the evening of February 1, when Columbus Police officers responded to a reported fight on the 1900 block of E. Main Street. According to the Columbus Division of Police official statement, they found Tommy McClendon unresponsive and injured at the scene.
Columbus Fire medics hastily transported McClendon to an area hospital in stable condition, but his state worsened after arrival. On February 18, at roughly 12:51 PM, he was pronounced deceased. The suspect, Dustin Thompson, was then indicted for murder on Wednesday after having been charged initially with Felonious Assault. While Thompson has claimed self-defense, the motives behind the violence remain murky as detectives continue their investigation into the deadly incident.
