In a recent court development, Anthony Sims, a 56-year-old man from Columbus, pleaded guilty to federal charges of sexual exploitation and sex trafficking involving minors. As detailed in the U.S. Department of Justice's announcement, Sims was accused of repeated sexual assaults on a 12-year-old girl and manipulating another 13-year-old into similar abuse, both of whom were minors at the time of the incidents.
According to the U.S Department of Justice, court documents, Sims, who was a registered sex offender with prior convictions in Michigan, admitted to raping the 12-year-old victim "40 to 50 times over the span of six months in 2020." Held down by Sims during the assaults, the girl was also intoxicated with marijuana and alcohol provided by the predator. Sims took compromising photos of the young girl, capturing her in sexually explicit poses.
The guilt extended to another victim, a 13-year-old who Sims also managed to drug with marijuana before sexually assaulting her. Sims then trafficked the same girl, taking her to various hotels where she was forced to engage in sex acts with approximately 50 men. Sims profited from these encounters, organizing the meetings and selling explicit photos of the young victim posed with innocuous objects like stuffed animals or pillows, perverting the innocence that they represent.
Ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address such egregious crimes against minors were spotlighted in the case, with the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission's Central Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations playing a key role. With the FBI's Cincinnati Division also involved, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio Kelly A. Norris, alongside other officials, announced Sims' guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Edmund A. Sargus, Jr. The plea agreement suggests a stern sentence ranging from 25 to 50 years in prison, reflecting the gravity of Sims' criminal actions against children.
Assistant United States Attorneys Emily Czerniejewski and Tyler J. Aagard have been tasked with representing the government in this case. Reinforcing the justice system's commitment to protecting the vulnerable, this case underscores the ongoing battle against the trafficking and exploitation of minors.
