A fire at Redmond Chase Apartment Homes in Floyd County tragically claimed the life of a 3-year-old child and left several others injured. The fire broke out Wednesday afternoon, just after 1 p.m. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that firefighters from the Rome-Floyd Fire Department arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the complex.
Three individuals, including two children, were rushed to Atrium Health Floyd's emergency room. The 3-year-old victim, identified as Koda "Koko" Luis Sandoval, later died from the injuries. His older sister, Ember "Emmy" Skye Luccketta, sustained second-degree burns, and an adult is being treated in the ICU. The family has started an online fundraiser for support, and Emmy is recovering after surgery, as reported by 11Alive.
Fire investigators from the Rome-Floyd Fire Department and state fire officials have determined the fire was electrical in origin, but the exact cause is still under investigation. The apartment unit suffered extensive damage.
