A Copley man has been handed a 13-year prison sentence for his crimes involving child sexual abuse material (CSAM), also known as child pornography. The individual, Brandon E. Crawford, 24, entered a guilty plea to the charges of receipt and distribution of visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, as well as possession of child pornography. U.S. District Judge David Ruiz handed down the sentence on March 11, 2025. It included not only prison time but also a supervisory release period of 10 years post-imprisonment and mandatory registration as a sex offender under the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act.
During the legal process, it was revealed that Crawford received and distributed CSAM files between November 2022 and January 2024. A federal investigation, which eventually led to his arrest and subsequent conviction, kicked off after they were able to seize a cellphone from Crawford, which was found to contain illicit content. "He used social media applications on his cellphone to trade CSAM with others," detailed in a statement obtained by the U.S. Justice Department's press release, exacerbating the extent of his criminal activity. Among the disturbing evidence discovered was at least one image that involved a minor under the age of 12.
The FBI-Akron Field Office thoroughly investigated the case and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter E. Daly of the Northern District of Ohio. Crawford's sentencing is a culmination of the efforts of many to bring to justice an individual who perpetuated the cycle of harm against the most vulnerable in our society. The punishment meted out by Judge Ruiz reflects the seriousness of Crawford's crimes and the broader societal intent to aggressively tackle and deter the distribution and possession of child pornography.
