The National Weather Service in El Paso issued a stark warning for residents in parts of New Mexico and Texas as critical fire danger is on the horizon. According to the National Weather Service, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Monday morning through Monday evening for strong winds and low relative humidity values, a combination that could set the stage for rapid fire spread should any ignite.
Specifically, the watch covers Fire Weather Zones 055, 110, 112, and 113 – an area that spans from the Southwest Mountains and Gila National Forest across the South Central Lowlands and into El Paso County. South to southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 35 to 40 mph, and a relative humidity between 7-12 percent are the troublesome factors, an NWS statement warned.
The conditions forecasted for the start of the week make for a combustible mix. The region, already parched with minuscule humidity levels and buffeted by strong gusts of wind, is a tinderbox waiting for a spark. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended, the NWS cautioned. It is the confluence of these elements, dry, gusty, and unyielding, that prompts the kind of vigilance now demanded of the counties under watch.
The Fire Weather Watch is a preemptive call to alertness for those within the affected zones. An Experimental RFTI (Ready for Fire Time Index) of 5 to 7 on the scale of 0 to 10, signals significant fire potential, the NWS stated, highlighting the heightened risk. The highest threat is situated along, and west of the Continental Divide, where the arid land whispers a warning. The NWS urges the public to listen for later forecasts and possible Red Flag Warnings as the situation unfolds.
Precautionary measures have been advised to minimize the risk of fire ignition. These involve adherence to local burn bans, proper disposal of cigarettes, and caution with any outdoor equipment that could inadvertently create sparks. In short, this is a time for awareness and precaution in these communities, where the whims of the weather hold sway over the land's peace and fury.
