A routine investigation turned dangerous in North City early yesterday morning, as members of the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force pursued suspects linked to a carjacked Toyota RAV4 from East St. Louis, Illinois. According to SLMPD, the stolen vehicle was located in the 4800 block of Cote Brilliante. Officers observed the suspects exit the RAV4 and enter another vehicle, a stolen Acura from Belleville, which prompted a police action that quickly escalated.
Local authorities immediately issued a description of the Acura. When District 6 officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the suspects chose to quickly flee, forcing officers to deploy spike strips at Queens & Harney. The Acura, in a dangerous move, swerved near an officer before the tire deflation devices took effect. Despite these efforts, the chase continued onto eastbound I-70, where the Acura collided with an uninvolved vehicle just before eastbound I-70 and Shreve.
The aftermath was chaotic – an 18-year-old man who was driving the Acura was taken into custody after a brief on-foot pursuit, while a 20-year-old passenger was arrested inside the vehicle. A third suspect's flight was dramatic, jumping over the median into I-70's eastbound express lanes. This dangerous maneuver resulted in both the suspect and an SLMPD officer being struck by a separate vehicle, leading to serious injuries for both.
Amid the maelstrom, the injured officer found himself unable to move, and in an attempt to rapidly alert others to his position, fired shots into the air, reminiscent of signals of distress. According to SLMPD, fellow officers responded, administering a tourniquet before rushing him to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Currently, he remains in critical but stable condition. The suspect is also in critical, unstable condition at another hospital. Police reportedly recovered two firearms from the Acura following the pursuit.
The involvement of another vehicle, a Cadillac CTS Sedan with notable passenger side rear damage and potentially damaged rear taillight, has initiated a public call for information. Witnesses who might have seen the vehicle post-incident, which was last noted with a bumper hanging off near the I-55/I-44 split around 8:50 a.m., are urged by St. Louis police to contact CrimeStoppers.
