A Deland man, Giovanni Bubenik, aged 29, was arrested last Friday on charges of attempted first-degree murder following an investigation into a brutal attack at a homeless campsite in Volusia County. According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the attack left an adult male victim with critical injuries and occurred in an encampment located off International Speedway Boulevard and Stone Street.
Investigators claim that Bubenik struck the victim repeatedly in the back of the head and had even dug a grave to bury him at the site. The suspect was tracked down and found hiding near a backyard shed at 147 Evergreen Terrace, roughly three miles from where the attack took place. During his arrest, Bubenik was taken down by K-9 Red, as noted in the deputy's body-worn camera footage.
The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, regained consciousness but reportedly suffered from significant long-term injury and memory loss. Bubenik was taken into custody and made his first court appearance the following Saturday. He is currently being held in the Volusia County Jail without bond.
