Cemeteries across the Delaware Valley have been targeted by a series of thefts. According to 6abc, over the past month, thieves have removed mausoleum doors containing rare metals, with each theft valued at over $10,000. These incidents have taken place in several counties, including Philadelphia, Delaware, Bucks, and Montgomery. At Montefiore Cemetery in Jenkintown, three sets of doors were found missing, likely taken overnight, as reported by Samantha Bromley, the cemetery’s general manager.
“It was shocking, to say the least,” Bromley told 6abc. Marple Township Police Chief Brandon Graeff highlighted the emotional toll on families, saying, "It's one thing to disturb and steal from someone's final resting place, but you're also trampling on the emotions of their loving loved ones."
The thefts have occurred at at least seven cemeteries, and law enforcement believes the crimes are linked. Detective Dan Lazzeari of Marple Police told FOX29 that a single group is likely responsible for the thefts. "We suspect a crew. Same crew," said Detective Lazzeari. "They're heavy. They're bronze metal doors valued between $10,000 and $15,000. We've been hearing estimates."
Authorities believe the thieves are selling the stolen doors for scrap metal. The total value of the stolen items has raised these crimes to felony charges.
Police are asking the public and local businesses for help. They have recommended that cemeteries consider installing surveillance cameras as a preventive measure. "We're talking $15,000 mausoleum doors. It might be something they have to consider doing because it would help us, it would help police," Police Chief Graeff said to WGAL.
Community members like Mary Beth McGinty have voiced their anger over the thefts, emphasizing the sanctity of the cemeteries and the disrespect shown to the deceased and their families.
Anyone with information about the thefts is urged to contact local authorities.
