A Delta flight, operated by Endeavor Air, experienced a snag during landing at LaGuardia Airport on Sunday night when its left wing struck the runway. The incident occurred on Flight 4814, which originated from Jacksonville, Florida, according to a report by the Silive. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the pilots executed a go-around after the strike, which happened around 10:10 p.m.
According to a statement by the FAA, there were no injuries or disruptions to the airport's operations. Amidst air traffic control communications, a controller was heard asking the pilot, "Somebody saw some sparks from one of your wings. You guys feel anything?" The pilot replied, "We didn't but we'll check it." The plane had faced an unstable approach during its initial landing attempt, as per ABC7NY.
Delta Air Lines assured customers that the crew followed proper procedures after the wing-strike incident. "The Endeavor Air flight crew followed established procedures to safely enact a go-around at New York-LaGuardia. The aircraft landed safely and proceeded to its arrival gate. We apologize to our customers for the experience," Delta said in a statement. Despite the incident, the plane was safely on the ground at LaGuardia as of yesterday afternoon, as detailed by ABC7NY.
The FAA has initiated an investigation to understand the specifics of this incident. Port Authority officials also confirmed that the event did not interfere with the airport's continuous flow of air traffic. The flight in question had 76 customers, two pilots, and two flight attendants onboard, all of whom were unharmed following the harrowing landing attempt. There has been no indication from Delta or the FAA on what might have caused the wing of the aircraft to come into contact with the runway.
