A 30-year-old man remains in critical but stable condition after he was ejected over the handlebars of a high-performance electric scooter on Austin Boulevard in Island Park, according to police. The rider suffered a severe head injury and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported in the crash.
Police said the man was traveling southbound on Austin Boulevard near Saratoga Boulevard when he stopped suddenly at the intersection, causing him to be thrown over the handlebars, as reported by News12 Long Island. He was riding a Teewing high-performance electric scooter, per the outlet's report. The unidentified man's exact condition has been described by the same account as critical but stable.
A Scooter Brand Built for Speeds Far Beyond Legal Limits
Teewing's lineup of high-performance electric scooters features motor outputs ranging from 2,400 to 8,000 watts, with factory top speeds between 43.5 and 55 mph, according to Teewing. The manufacturer's own user manuals specify that unlocked high-speed modes are intended strictly for off-road or private property use, not public streets. Under New York State law, electric scooters may not be operated above 15 mph on public roads and may only be ridden on streets with posted limits of 30 mph or less, per the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee. That same state framework requires riders to be at least 16 years old and mandates helmets for riders aged 16 and 17.
Austin Boulevard's History of Deadly Crashes
The stretch of roadway where the crash occurred has drawn scrutiny before. In August 2025, the exact intersection of Austin Boulevard and Saratoga Boulevard was the site of a fatal crash in which a 42-year-old pedestrian and his dog were struck and killed by a southbound vehicle, according to the Nassau County Police Department. That same month, a 79-year-old man riding an e-bike on an Austin Boulevard sidewalk died after swerving into traffic to avoid a vehicle exiting a Dunkin' drive-thru, Newsday reported.
The corridor's dangers prompted the Town of Hempstead to lower the speed limit on Austin Boulevard from 40 mph to 30 mph in March 2018, following years of community concern over a six-lane thoroughfare with a history of crashes. The road sits in Island Park. Safety concerns have also focused on the boulevard.
