In an initiative aimed at enhancing diversity within its ranks, the Denver Police Department celebrates the graduation of 35 women from its EmpowHer Police Academy. The department shared the milestone through a social media post after the culmination of a specialized six-week hiring event that aims to boost the number of women in law enforcement. Part of a broader commitment known as the 30x30 Pledge, which the Denver PD signed back in 2021, seeks to ensure that 30 percent of police recruit classes are women by the year 2030, according to the Denver Police Department.
The EmpowHer Police Academy, led by current women officers, gives potential recruits a comprehensive look into what it means to be a Denver police officer. The program includes hands-on activities, and real-world insights meant to educate and inspire. According to the Denver Police Department, "Last October, DPD began taking extra steps to inspire the next generation of women Denver Police officers with the EmpowHer Police Academy — a unique, six-week hiring event led by current women police officers that immerses attendees in the world of law enforcement, with hands-on activities that provide real-world insights into the career of a Denver Police officer." The March 7, graduating class saw 22 women taking their inspiration to the next level, applying to become Denver Police officers.
Some critique the efforts as a PR move, while proponents see this as a crucial step towards redefining the gender balance in a traditionally male-dominated field. The EmpowHer Academy not only represents the department's attempt at progress, but it also underlines a nationwide push for increased inclusivity and representation in law enforcement. The results from this and similar programs across the country are closely watched by those advocating for gender equity in public safety roles.
