A DeSoto K9 officer identified as Robertson #350 proved instrumental in the capture of 30-year-old Tyler Lee Smith, who was on the run as an armed and dangerous felon. The DeSoto Police Department shared details of the Friday night incident that unfolded in the parking lot of an apartment complex on E. Wintergreen Road, where the K9 officer initially spotted and approached Smith around 8:30 pm.
Smith, attempting to slip away, fled on foot through a field but found himself swiftly surrounded by the DeSoto Police officers of the Delta Shift and the persistent K9. Despite Smith's effort to assume another identity, complete with a Social Security card and Texas driver's license, the officers were not deceived. The suspect, a resident of Amarillo, is wanted on multiple felony charges as reported by the DeSoto Police Department.
In the wake of the apprehension, DeSoto Police Chief Joe Costa highlighted the department's commitment to community safety. "Thanks to the quick action of our K9 unit and Delta Shift officers, we were able to ensure the safety of our community by apprehending a suspect who poses a significant risk," Chief Costa praised the officers' performance in an update on social media.
The charges filed against Smith are serious, including Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and others related to his evasion and false identification attempts.
