In a move heralded as a game-changer for local transit, Douglas County is bringing a new form of transportation to Highlands Ranch, aptly choosing microtransit to bridge the gaps in existing services, ensuring rides for those frequenting auto repair shops, doctor's appointments, or even returning from a happy hour escapade, this development was unanimously approved by the Board of Douglas County Commissioners on Tuesday, with a $2,901,410 contract secured with transportation innovator, Via Transportation Inc., according to Douglas County.
The initiative, which closely mirrors the successful Link on Demand service in Lone Tree, is set to launch in late spring 2025, it promises to endow residents, especially the youth and the elderly, with the freedom to get to shopping centers, schools, and medical facilities with ease, Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle expressed his anticipation, stating, "As Commissioners, it’s our honor to serve our community and find new solutions that make our residents’ lives easier," as reported by Douglas County.
Commissioners have emphasized the program's potential to assist older adults, a demographic that has been vocal about their need for convenient transit options to access essential services, “As part of our Older Adult Initiative, we heard loud and clear that older adults need help getting to and from doctors’ appointments, the grocery store and entertainment,” Commissioner George Teal shared, as per Douglas County, underscoring the primary intent behind the launch of the program.
The microtransit solution will operate at varied times throughout the week, specifically from Monday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., extending until 10 p.m. on Fridays, and having a more relaxed schedule from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, the service will be accessible through an app or via phone, it's designed to bring a flexibility reminiscent of private car convenience, while also integrating with the Regional Transportation District (RTD) hubs, as detailed by Douglas County.
