Duluth and Midtown Atlanta have both been scenes to DUI-related traffic incidents, as captured by recent news coverage. In one case, a driver in Duluth was filmed running a red light and crashing into another vehicle. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the white truck involved did not stop when the light turned red and hit a dark-colored car. The truck's driver, who sustained a head injury, was taken to the hospital and is facing DUI charges. At the crash site, police found empty BuzzBallz cans in the truck and reported the driver was still drinking when officers arrived.
Meanwhile, on the I-75/85 connector, a major crash unfolded early on a Friday morning, resulting in a lengthy shutdown of the roadway. Running north in the southbound HOV lane, an underage, wrong-way driver believed to be intoxicated caused the accident. As reported by Atlanta News First, Georgia State Patrol confirmed the 20-year-old driver, Addison Thornton, failed a DUI test. Alongside DUI charges, Thornton was charged with underage consumption and possession of a fake ID. The collision involved two cars, leaving the passenger, a 17-year-old, with serious injuries and both drivers hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
After the Midtown crash, recovery crews worked overnight to clear debris. All lanes reopened by 7 a.m., but the damage left by one person driving under the influence was clear.
