In the early hours of Saturday morning, a Dunwoody police officer had a close call with a suspected drunk driver near Perimeter Mall. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that a witness saw a driver asleep behind the wheel of a Mercedes at the intersection of Ashford Dunwoody Road and Hammond Drive around 5 a.m. After the driver woke up and drove erratically, the witness alerted authorities a second time when the driver was seen again.
Officers responding to the call had to maneuver quickly to avoid a crash. An officer saw the driver heading the wrong way on Ashford Dunwoody Road at Perimeter Center North and had to swerve to avoid a collision. Further down the road at Meadow Lane, another officer was unable to avoid the impaired driver, resulting in a head-on collision, as reported by 11Alive.
Both the officer and the driver were injured, but neither injury was serious. The officer was "okay," and the driver was cleared medically at a local hospital. After being released, the driver was arrested on an active warrant and charged with DUI, driving on the wrong side of the road, and a seatbelt violation, according to the Dunwoody Police Department, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The Georgia State Patrol has taken over the investigation.
