His role, essential in evaluating the integrity of these examinations, starts with poring over investigation findings and extends to assessing body-worn camera footage and various documentation, as reported by the City of Philadelphia's official website.
Drawn to this line of work by a background in Criminology and Sociology and inspired by his time as a Fulbright scholar in Finland, Stevens applies his research capabilities to uplift Philadelphia's approach to criminal justice. He conveys a sense of fulfillment when aiding individuals with his expertise, whether guiding complainants through the process or connecting them to resources that can address their needs. "It is an amazing feeling to know that I have made a positive impact in someone’s life," Stevens told the City of Philadelphia in a recent interview.
Ensuring thorough investigations stands as the crux of Stevens' professional satisfaction. Observing tangible improvements in the quality of IAD investigations reaffirms the significance of his role, and he acknowledges that a big part of the job is working closely with other departments. Stevens remarks, "After spending a few months providing feedback to IAD investigators on the completed investigation case files, it has been incredible to see a notable increase in the quality and completeness of the investigations." His position within the division allows him to influence policies and procedures directly, thereby elevating the standards of police accountability, as per the city's press release.
