The area is bracing itself for west winds reaching 35 to 45 mph and gusts that could accelerate to a staggering 65 mph, bringing the potential for downed trees and power outages across southwest New Mexico and southwest Texas, according to the National Weather Service.
Visibility is also threatened as the Blowing Dust Advisory predicts that visibility may drop to between one-quarter and one mile in some areas, creating hazardous driving conditions and a significant concern for those with respiratory issues, as reported by the National Weather Service. Travel could be extremely challenging for high-profile vehicles who might find the gusty winds a formidable adversary.
Complementing these warnings, a Red Flag Warning also remains in effect from 11 AM to 9 PM MDT today because of critical fire weather conditions expected throughout the region. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior, the NWS warns, discouraging any form of outdoor burning as this could swiftly lead to the spread of wildfires.
The advisories come as slight relief from southern New Mexico and Far West Texas trying to protect their communities, additional precautions have been suggested by the National Weather Service for residents to stay in lower levels of homes to avoid windows, and be mindful of potential falling debris, if people must take to the roads they are instilled to exercise a great deal of caution amidst the dangerous atmospheric tumult.
