The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center is putting out the call for nominations of exceptional contributors to the Latino/a/e/x cultural arts scene in Austin, as detailed in a recent announcement by the center. In line with their goal to celebrate significant achievements in the cultural arts, the ESB MACC's Awards of Excellence are again looking to highlight those who have displayed commendable leadership and have made impactful contributions within the community.
Those interested in nominating candidates have until March 23, to submit their picks via the center’s online nomination form. However, there are a couple of caveats to keep in mind; self-nominations are a no-go, and City of Austin employees and officials are out of the running—both for submitting and receiving nominations.
According to the ESB MACC advisory board, there's a wide net being cast when it comes to eligibility. Nominations can be made for individuals or groups from any artistic discipline, as long as they've significantly influenced the Latino/a/e/x cultural arts within Austin or its surrounding areas. The board has outlined several categories for nomination, including Emerging Artist, The Arts, Service, Arts Educator, Lifetime Achievement, and a Posthumous Award.
The review committee has a bit of a puzzle to solve if nominees are Jacks, or Jills, of all trades excelling in multiple categories. In cases like these, they'll decide which category the nominee fits best, aligning their work, contributions, and overall impact with the corresponding award. This decision-making process ensures that nominees are recognized in the areas where they've truly shone.
It's crucial to recognize those who have driven cultural enrichment in Austin, and the Awards of Excellence from the ESB MACC actively spotlight the dedication and creativity at play. While the full list of past winners from 2009 through 2024 is available on the ESB MACC's website, Austin's cultural community eagerly awaits to see who will join those ranks this year. For more details or to nominate someone who has made a mark on Austin's cultural arts, individuals are encouraged to visit AustinTexas.gov/MACCAWARDS. With a deadline just around the corner, now’s the time for Austin’s residents to throw their favorite cultural champions into the ring.
