Last Saturday, a fatal collision in Fairview led to the arrest of Leonardo Bollas-Zafra, 27, on multiple criminal charges. Deputies from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) responded to a crash notification and found Bollas-Zafra with his Toyota Camry, where he claimed to be a hit-and-run victim. However, evidence and a subsequent blood alcohol test revealed a different story.

Deputies at the scene, near NE 201st Avenue and NE Broadway Court, were called at roughly 2:18 a.m. to respond to an automated crash alert from Toyota. Around the same time, Bollas-Zafra contacted 911, alleging his involvement in a hit-and-run incident, MCSO deputies located him near NE 158th Avenue and NE Fremont Street, appearing disoriented and struggling to answer basic questions.

According to MCSO reports, they found another man unconscious at NE Halsey Street, who despite life-saving efforts, passed away at the scene. The man is believed to have been a passenger in the Toyota when it collided with a power pole.

Field sobriety tests conducted on Bollas-Zafra showed impairments and a hospital-administered blood draw registered his blood alcohol level at .23, a figure nearly three times over the permissible limit for driving. For his role in the accident, and the resulting fatality, Bollas-Zafra now faces incarceration on charges that include manslaughter in the second degree, felony hit and run, driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII), and reckless driving.
