A tragic car crash in Charlotte's North Division has claimed the life of a 19-year-old man, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) revealed details of the incident involving a black Infinity G35 and a Freightliner tractor-trailer on the 5200 block of Sunset Road.
According to a press release by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the crash occurred early Friday morning, around 1:55 a.m. Emergency services responded to the scene where they found Jason Torres-Celis, 19, ejected from his vehicle and pronounced deceased by MEDIC. The report noted that Torres-Celis was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of a crash.
The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit, together with the DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search, are conducting a meticulous investigation into the crash circumstances. "The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Celis was traveling northeast on Sunset Road towards Statesville Road at a high rate of speed," according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department statement. His vehicle apparently lost control, crossing the median and colliding with the oncoming Freightliner.
While it has not been confirmed if impairment played a role in the incident, authorities are waiting on the toxicology results. The CMPD has made a call for witnesses or anyone with pertinent information regarding the crash to come forward. Jason Torres-Celis's next of kin has been notified, and as further details emerge, CMPD Public Affairs has committed to providing updates on the case, referenced as report number 20250307-0155-03.
