The Parkway East inbound lanes, east of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, have reopened after a lethal incident early this morning. The crash involved a silver Corvette, which Pennsylvania State Police say was moving at high speeds before it hit a stopped Honda Civic. The impact consequently involved two additional vehicles. CBS News Pittsburgh reports the accident occurred just before 2 a.m. when the Corvette crashed into the Civic, which was stationary due to a temporary closure of the tunnel.
Landon Ray, the driver of the Civic, was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, state police confirmed. Other individuals involved in the accident were treated for their injuries at the scene. According to Triblive, the identities and hometowns of the individuals, including Donald Lewis, the driver of the Corvette, have not been disclosed.
The road closure due to the crash caused notable disruptions. The inbound lanes were sealed off for nearly four hours, with traffic resuming close to 5:45 a.m. This stretch of highway sees heavy daily traffic, with an estimated 85,000 vehicles using it, as stated by TribLive, citing data from PennDOT traffic maps.
The Pennsylvania State Police's Collision Analysis, Reconstruction Specialist, and Forensic Services Units are spearheading the investigation into the precise cause of the crash. WPXI reports that all other parties involved were treated by medics present on the scene.
