A father and son are facing charges in connection with the death of a bicyclist in a hit-and-run incident in Fort Lauderdale. Pedro Vasallo II, 24, is charged with failing to stop or remain at an accident involving death, while his father, Pedro Vasallo Sr., 61, is charged with being an accessory after the fact to a first-degree felony, according to Local 10.
The younger Vasallo is accused of hitting 58-year-old Kenneth Solovay on his bicycle along Davie Boulevard on December 14, 2024. Surveillance footage and car parts found at the scene led investigators to a silver 2019 Mercedes Benz, traced back to an address in Plantation, pointing to Vasallo II as the driver.
NBC Miami reported that a doorbell camera captured a conversation in which a woman, Donna Compagniotte, mentioned that Vasallo II had hit someone on a bicycle. Although Compagniotte initially claimed she did not recall making the statement, she later confirmed in a sworn statement that Vasallo II had returned home that night and told her he had been involved in a crash.
Investigators believe they have evidence linking Vasallo Sr. to the incident, with footage showing him moving the damaged Mercedes to a backyard in an attempt to hide it. Both men were arrested on Tuesday. Vasallo II's bond is set at $70,000, and his father is awaiting a court appearance.
