According to a social media post by Tom Homan, President Donald Trump's border czar, a large operation has led to the arrest of 370 immigrants in the Boston area over the past week. Homan described the effort, which began last Tuesday, as an "all of government" approach to targeting "egregious" criminal offenders and claimed the majority of those arrested were significant criminals involved in activities such as drug trafficking and violent offenses, as reported by NBC10 Boston.
The operation involved multiple federal agencies including the FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals, and the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service, and was not just about arresting undocumented immigrants but, according to Homan, making "the neighborhoods of Boston and Massachusetts much safer," a statement that has stirred controversy and pushback from local officials, as detailed by NBC10 Boston. Homan criticized Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey for their policies, which he views as obstructive to ICE's mission and safety efforts.
Contained within a press release obtained by NBC10 Boston, ICE Homeland Security Investigations New England Special Agent in Charge Michael Krol stressed the necessity of such operations, citing the importance of interagency collaboration in mitigating threats posed by transnational criminal organizations. The ICE statement also revealed substantial seizures, including drugs and firearms, taken during the arrests of those with significant criminal convictions and charges.
While Homan called out the Massachusetts governance, in a recent interview with NBC10 Boston, Governor Healey maintained that the state is not a sanctuary and cooperates with law enforcement; however, she was unclear on Homan's specific references saying, "I'm not sure what the director's referring to but it's certainly always been our position that those who do things that are crimes, that people who are violent in communities, should be held accountable and taken off the streets," Meanwhile, Mayor Wu, responding to Homan's previous declaration of bringing "hell" to Boston, defended the city's commitment to its residents and values in her State of the City address, saying, "Boston has stood up for the people we love and the country we built, and we're not stopping now."
In tandem with Homan's announcement, 7NEWS reported on the unfolding situation, highlighting Homan's role in the operation and the inclusion of multiple federal agencies.
