The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office has reintroduced their mounted patrol unit and enlisted the help of local students in naming their newest equine member. After a competitive contest involving nine schools, the honor went to Felix Varela High School's agriscience program, which boasts participation by 240 students, as was noted by Local 10.
The contest winner, announced yesterday, named the horse Valor, a choice that resonates with the students' perception of their own identity and essence, Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said in a statement obtained by WSVN, "The definition of valor is to be a warrior, to be brave. The funny thing is I was educated by the students who named it that they felt that that’s who they are and what a wonderful way to bring that all right back together to the Office of the Sheriff."
Valor's name was celebrated with an up-close introduction for the winning contestants at Felix Varela High School, where the students' involvement in the agriscience program goes beyond contests and extends to animal care – even the farm's dogs and cats are available for adoption, as mentioned by Local 10.
To commemorate the selection of the name, plaques were presented to the students as recognition of their contribution.
