
State Route 87 was the scene of a catastrophic event yesterday morning around 7:20 a.m. near Gilbert Road, where a fiery accident involving three vehicles has led to undisclosed fatalities and significant roadway disruptions. The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the collision, which involved a semi-truck catching fire upon impact with another vehicle. The DPS has yet to release the identities of those involved or the number of casualties. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, "A semi and one vehicle did catch fire on impact," and the southbound lanes of State Route 87 were subsequently closed with no immediate information on when they might reopen.
The crash's aftermath saw southbound traffic diverted as all lanes were initially shut down at Gilbert Road, according to 12 News. The fire from the crash spread from the initial vehicle to quickly to engulf the semi-truck and spread to the surrounding area. Compounding the dramatic scene, another vehicle was reported to have ended up in a nearby canal, although details regarding occupants have yet to be made public.
For several hours, the collision site remained a no-go zone as emergency services worked to manage the scene. By 10 a.m., the right lane was once more passable, while the left lane continued to be blocked, reflecting the magnitude of the incident and the sweep of the response required to confront the flames and wreckage. Despite uncertainty surrounding the full human toll, the Salt River Fire Department's involvement underscores the seriousness of the incident and the multi-agency effort that was necessary to bring the fires under control and to manage the aftermath.
Closure of the southbound lanes was lifted shortly before 10 a.m., signaling a return to partial normalcy on this stretch of State Route 87. As crews continued to labor on-site, "The fire has been extinguished," Salt River Fire Department officials shared. However, confirming the continued search for understanding, the cause behind the crash currently remains unknown.
