The state of Texas just celebrated the spirit of service with the announcement of the 41st Annual Governor's Volunteer Awards, overseen by First Lady Cecilia Abbott and OneStar Foundation. Announced annually, the awards recognize individuals and groups dedicated to volunteering and positively impacting their communities. First Lady Abbott, in her acknowledgment of the recipients, said, "I am honored to celebrate these 17 incredible awardees whose passion and dedication uplifts communities all across Texas." Their effort and commitment, she emphasized, bring to life the very heart of Texas through generosity and kindness. "Their stories remind us that the true heart of Texas lies in the generosity and kindness of its people, and we are excited to share their inspiring examples of service and leadership," Abbott said in a statement obtained by Gov.Texas.gov.
The full roster of honorees spans various categories, including the 'Governor's Lifetime Achievement Award' which was received by advocates like Ruth Jordan of San Angelo, who has served her community for over 25 years, and Wayne R. Maynard of Dallas, who has completed 308 missions as a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight South Central. Additionally, the 'First Lady's Rising Star Award' was given to young visionaries like Hannah Ho of Fort Worth for her role in addressing teen mental health and Miriam Khan of Spring for her work providing art supplies to classrooms in need. These awards reflect not only the individual contributions of each recipient but also become a rallying call for others to likewise step up and make a difference.
Chris Bugbee, President and CEO of OneStar Foundation, acknowledged the powerful narratives of these volunteers stating, "These remarkable stories showcase the power of service to transform lives and strengthen our communities." Organizations from Professional Compounding Centers of America to ServiceMaster of Wichita Falls also took home honors for their corporate philanthropy. In the vein of uniting goodwill and action, the awarded family and community champions have each found ways to integrate service deeply into their daily lives and operations.
Engagement with the community is vital, demonstrated by efforts like those of Samir Becic of Houston, recognized with the 'Volunteer of the Year Award.' Becic has devoted over 20 years to enhancing health and fitness across Texas, making sacrifices in his personal life to ensure that others may benefit from his work. His volunteering ethos aligns with stories from all the awarded, binding them in their pursuit to tirelessly contribute towards their communities.
The celebration of these individuals and organizations will commence during National Volunteer Month in April with a reception at the Texas Governor's Mansion.
