In a bid to reclaim her position, former Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley faced the City Council to appeal her recent ousting by Mayor Karen Bass over accusations of mismanagement during the Palisades Fire. According to FOX 11, Crowley needs the support of at least 10 out of the 15 council members to be reinstated, however, the outcome remains uncertain as it is said that four council members publicly sided with Bass during the announcement of Crowley's dismissal.
Crowley, showing gratitude before a crowd of supporters, stated, "There's been a tremendous amount of love and outpouring from the community, and I'm just so grateful to have you back here, and the communities that supported us," as reported by ABC7, while approximately 50 union firefighters were also present in solidarity, detailing her readiness to work with Bass if reinstated because, as she believes "in the end, we want the same thing -- and that's to support the community."
The hearing marks Crowley's first public appearance since her termination, which came after Mayor Bass criticized her for sending home 1,000 firefighters on the day the wildfires commenced and for refusing to compile an after-action report. KTLA noted Crowley's previous statement where she expressed pride in her 30 years of service, emphasizing her dedication to the welfare of firefighters so that they could, in turn, care for the communities.
While City Councilwoman Traci Park voiced concern over the council having to make what she called a political decision and raised fears about it being political theatre, at least one council member, Monica Rodriguez, has shown support for Crowley, condemning the mayor's actions as scapegoating, and the two council members, Monica Rodriguez and Traci Park, have previously spoken out against Crowley's firing, with Park expressing that she has not had an opportunity to hear from Crowley on these issues, considering her stance further adds to the unpredictability of the pending vote. In the interim, as the search for a new fire chief takes place, retired Deputy Chief Ronnie Villanueva serves as the temporary chief.
