In Franklin, Tennessee, a city renowned for its deep Civil War history, new U.S. Line Markers are being installed to highlight the positions where the U.S. Army entrenched during the intense Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864. These markers, designed to offer historical context and help visualize the battlefield's past, are being placed at significant sites, connecting present-day residents with the area's rich history.
The project has been in the works for nearly two decades, spearheaded by the dedicated individuals of the U.S. Line Marker Subcommittee of the Civil War Historical Commission. Upon completion, "there will be 20 markers at 10 locations, giving a clearer picture of how the battlefield looked -and how it has changed over time," as specified in a recent social media post from the City of Franklin. Residents can currently see markers along Columbia Avenue near Carter Hill Park, and preparations are underway for additional markers to be installed along Hillsboro Road, New Hwy 96, and Fair Street.
Those keen on the local history, can track the installation's progress through updates and video content shared by the City of Franklin. The intent of these installations is not only to educate but also to offer a tangible connection to the past events that shaped Franklin into the city it is today.
